summer prints and refashion

It's going to be lots and lots of print this summer. Last week at Salvation Army, I was so thrilled to spot a cute paisley print skirt amidst a whole rack of gaudy floral print ones . I mean... not that this 90's Ann Taylor skirt looks very exciting but the print is fabulous, and the fabric feels soft and breezy. So I saw the potential of refashioning it into a mullet (high low) skirt. Adin at Chetopian Family refashioned her vintage dress into a gorgeous mullet dress, so I am very inspired to try it myself.

the original skirt didn't look too cute on me, and for some reason,
the lining kept peeping from under too, which is also not very cute.

thrifted tunic ($1, refashioned, Hi-thrift)
thrifted Ann Taylor skirt ($5, refashioned, Salvation Army)
Zara shoes ($15, sale)
belt ($7)

 do you like mullet skirts?
if only my skirt is a little bit longer, it would be perfect!

paisley print, so delicate and pretty

DIY mullet skirt (almost no sew):
Lay the skirt flat with the side facing you.
Estimate how short you want the front to be.
Then cut a curve from the front of the skirt all the way to the back.
You don't need to hem it if the fabric doesn't fray.
As for the skirt lining, cut a straight line across.

Linking up at Thrifty Thursday, Recycled Fashion Finds and Ta-dah Tuesday.

Thanks to Kezzie from KezzieAG too for the lovely Versatile Blogger Award, she is one of the kindest and sweetest person I have ever known in this bloggy world. She has got a cute modern vintage style and her blog contains interesting musing of her life in London. Check out her blog!

I am leaving this saturday for our family vacation , I will see you after 17 June.
Have a wonderful week!

  7. I LOVE this! I tried it a few weeks ago on a skirt, but I didn't hem it and I felt like a criminal or something being out in the world unhemmed. So my friend she'd do it for me in a couple days if I played with her kids to keep them busy while she hemmed my skirt. Easy deal! Can't wait!

  8. I think it's just right! You did a great job on it especially since this skirt had a lining. It looks much better!

  9. What a change! I love the addition of the belt too. Haven't done much with mixing prints yet. I will have to venture out.

  11. nice job! I'm actually wearing an asymmetrical DIY dress right now and totally want to refashion more and more skirts and dresses and even tops :P
now, when it comes to your skirt I love the pattern and the colour scheme. it's so pretty for summer. and you have really nailed the look by adding some stripes and a fierce waist-belt!
ps. I hope your vacation will be outstandingly amazing! :)

  16. Mongs, you are looking very cute in this outfit ! Did you get a haircut ?
I love it when skirts flow a little with the gentle breeze and it is possible only when you have a mullet shaped skirt. The color and the softness of the fabric is also perfect for summer, I feel. It is indeed good to see you refashioning a long skirt {which is quite heavy and useless in summer} into something very wearable .
The white shoes are doing full justice to the look.
I will be waiting for your new post once you come back from your holidays:-)
    Enjoy your vacation!

  20. Wow, another great remake! And a brave one with that kind of fabric. I tried to do a hi-lo on a thrifted skirt and then tried to hem it. It was such a mess. So bravo to your sewing skills again! And what a great print!

  21. It looks really cute now! Hate it when the lining on skirts does that. I love the seafoam colour and would never have thought of pairing it with stripes, but it goes so well!

    Thanks for linking up xx

  22. It looks great! I am quite partial to "mullet" skirts (or, as I prefer, 'asymetrical hemline :D) because my wedding dress had it!

  23. Sigh of envy. Another fabulous do-over - it looks great!

  24. As always, I am awed by your creativity. I love that skirt. Most mullet skirts and dresses aren't suited for the office, although I do have one midi-length mullet dress i didn't try on from a clearance rack, and didn't realize it was a mullet skirt until I got home :p But it's a lot longer, so I can sneak it work :)

  25. This is gorgeous. You are such a talent! The print and color of the skirt are so pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Such a PRETTY skirt! I love it when you're just skimming the racks and a pattern jumps out at you and it ends up being something you like (or in your case, something you can work with :-) ) I like how you're wearing it with the belt!

  93. This is a great refashion! You have a good eye for seeing how a 90s item has value (nice print and fabric) and making it modern. I wouldn't have thought to put that particular belt, top and skirt together, but they work really well!! Despite being chunky, the belt manages to not overwhelm the other pieces. The buckle plays up the nautical vibe of your top.

By the way, what does Hi-thrift mean? Purchased from a more high-end thrift store?
